Last Friday, there was a game between Crespi and St.Bonaventure and I, along with another friend of mine, were watching the game. Most of our conversation centered around a thoroughly inspiring story that is in fact, a great recruiting story. After hearing the story, I started viewing my college recruiting process through a different perspective altogether.

There was a STUD RB back in Southern California who suddenly interested my friend because coaches were not ready to consider him at all because he did not possess any great credentials. They just measured his not-so-inspiring physical attributes like height and weight and thought that he was not fit to represent the college. They could not see what was in his heart. They did not know the stamina and endurace of his will.

They had not seen any film on the kid, so they just assumed based on his paper variables that he couldn't play at their school. Well, my buddy started working with him on how to get his name out there; they started putting together a highlight video, putting it online and emailing coaches. One of the key components to his story is that when he would email coaches, he would use a UNIQUE subject line in his email...for example:

SUBJECT: "I am the Running Back YOU need"...; "Running Back to help YOUR program"; "CA Star RB to help your program"

These subject lines were mainly used to generate interest in the minds of the coaches to open the email and read it. Of course, in the email, he would request them to go through his online video that showcased his profile.

***One key tactic he used is that he put his ONLINE PROFILE link in the signature of ALL of his emails...you never know who may end up seeing it!

This young man realized he had to turn his recruiting campaign into a PR campaign. He started contacting people at Scout.com to generate interest in him...as he began to build some hype around him he got his first offer. Now, this is where things got good...he went from 0 offers to 8 D1 offers in a matter of few weeks. Once he got his first offer, he began to use this first offer to parlay it with the coaches he had been in communication with previously. He started emailing the coaches and letting him know that X school had just offered him a scholarship.

The general mentality of human beings is to want to have what is difficult for them to have. This promptly made the coaches extend their offers to this players. Later, when he traveled to North Carolina, he informed all the coaches of all the major universities in the State that he was available to stop by their school. He showed them his profile on the video. When his family drove around the major colleges of North Carolina, the results were amazing. By the end of the evening, he had four offers on his lap.

So let me inspire you on HOW to go from 0-8 D1 offers in a matter of a few weeks (of course you gotta be able to play!):

1. Focus on what you want. It should become an obsession in you. You must take suitable and purposeful action for achieving this in life. "Action" is the six-letter word that fires your rocket to reach your goal.

2. You should promote yourself using all possible means. Sometimes PR works most effectively.

3. You should be sure and carry DVD's with you so that you can show your video profiles to all concerned. Treat them like your business cards, and they must also contain details of your online profile.
